Way Too Much Joy
On Shemini Atzeret, Scott turns to Psalm 100 to ask what genuine joy in worship looks like when life gives you little reason to feel it.
Sukkot ended yesterday. The tradition we’ve received calls it the season of our rejoicing, and the joy doesn’t let up: today is Shemini Atzeret, which past teachings here have described as simply being in God’s presence with nothing required of anyone, and tomorrow is Simchat Torah. So Scott stepped up on the eighth day and named the problem, way too much joy.
When the boss says pack it up, or the test results come back bad, and you can’t feel joy and won’t fake it, what are you supposed to do with a psalm that tells all the earth to shout?
